Mediator's Role?

​​The mediator’s role is to help the parties, through a very effective problem solving process, resolve the issues between them. The mediator’s role includes:

• Helping the parties to define exactly what they are disputing;
• Making sure the discussion stays on track;
• Assisting the parties to identify and communicate their priorities and concerns; 
• Supporting the parties in reaching an agreement; and
• Creating a comfortable environment for the discussion.

Mediators are trained and experienced in dispute resolution. They are neutrals who help the parties explore options to resolve the problem and, often, find an outcome that is preferred to that of the court.  The mediator does not act as either party's lawyer or a judge and does not give legal advice, but rather helps the parties resolve or narrow their issues within the framework of the law.
